TrueSpace - Older, full retail, version (3.2) made available as a free download. Full 3D production system with a more down-to-earth price tag for current version.

GMAX - Modeling software FREE from Discreet, makers of 3D Studio Max. Gamers' favorite! Help files.

Blender, the open source software for 3D modeling, animation, rendering, post-production, interactive creation and playback. Available for Windows, Linux, Irix, Sun Solaris, FreeBSD or Mac OS X.

POV Ray - The Persistence of Vision Raytracer is a high-quality, totally free tool for creating stunning three-dimensional graphics. It is available in official versions for Windows, Mac OS/Mac OS X and i86 Linux. The source code is available for those wanting to do their own ports.

100% Free - Slightly Limited

This is high end software that is only partially disabled and released for educational purposes. This is done because the learning curve is steep and it's a long haul to the light at the end of the tunnel, but once you've learned it, they feel you'll be disinclined to buy from a competitor. They're probably right. In their battle for dominance, you win!

Maya PLE - Same as the $2000 retail version(Maya Complete), but watermarks the output. Full 3D production system. (Some other minor limitations).

Softimage|XSI EXP -Limited output size (max.510x510) and proprietary output file format, but has all the bells and whistles Maya leaves out. Full 3D production system. (Some other minor limitations).

Beta Versions

Fully functional software that may be buggy and not ready for sale, offered under a Beta test agreement. (Everything actually belongs in this category, but that would take away all the adventure).

Bongo - Keyframe animation plugin for Rhino 3D, under development.

Calimax - Freeware program to create Povray scripts. So you can make photo realistic pictures and animations with the two programs Calimax and Povray. V2 in Beta 5.
